British American Tobacco is trying to reverse Kenya's ban on nicotine pouches

2022 09/05

In 2020, British American Tobacco announced that it will spend 2.5 billion shillings to open a new factory to start producing nicotine pouches in Kenya. However, the country's Ministry of Health, supported by several civil society lobby groups including the International Institute for Legislative Affairs, suppressed sales of the product and announced a ban in October 2020. Two years later, after constant lobbying by British American Tobacco and some tobacco harm reduction experts, the nicotine pouches are back on the Kenyan market. Also, the tobacco company is still working on opening a nicotine manufacturing plant in Nairobi.
